Freedom From Pride with Sheila Wavamunno

blog post on freedom from pride

Welcome to our ‘Freedom From’ series where every month we share stories of women who have found freedom from a hurt, habit, or hang up and want to encourage others that freedom is for them too. Today we are talking about pride with Sheila Wavamunno, a language tutor who loves Jesus, words, books, dark chocolate, and cultures.

How the struggle with pride started

I don’t even think I can say that I am totally free, but at least I am more aware that pride is subtle and lingers. I can’t pinpoint exactly how I became proud, but perhaps it was through my love for a good debate and my love of and search for knowledge, that indeed puffs up as the bible says in 1 Corinthians 8:1.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown, I entered into many theological arguments that tended to leave me frustrated and with strained relationships. I had to decide if making others see as I see was really what God called me to do.

God gently reminded me that He cares about people more than I ever could. He has revealed to me my desire to fix people, which is impossible. What I really needed was to fix myself. It was during this time that I took a break from social media. I learned to let go and accept that I do not need to have the last word. The death of pride in one’s life can be a slow, messy process.

How life has changed since finding freedom from pride

I still struggle in this area but I’m more aware of how subtle pride can be. My relationships have improved and I don’t get as frustrated when I can’t persuade someone to my point of view. I am learning to entrust all matters to God. I also have a good friend that both encourages and rebukes me when needed.

If you find yourself struggling with pride, I would point you to Proverbs 3:5 which says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Do not be wise in your own eyes.”

What is obvious to you, may not be obvious to another person. Entrust yourself and others to God who is not only a loving father but also omniscient.
