Every Day is Trash Day

Sunday through Thursday a trash service comes to my apartment and retrieves my discarded trash for the day. As I was setting out the trash today I was reminded of how closely taking out the trash and God sending his son Jesus to this earth to walk with among us are related.  I know my way of thinking is often borderline bizarre, but hang in there with me as I try to explain myself. Let’s rewind and tie together the threads of my thought process that directed me to my destination.

Every day we as humans accumulate trash. It’s pretty much unavoidable if you eat or own anything. If we didn’t take out our trash at least weekly and let it collect in our homes soon our house would start rotting and reeking from the inside out. Our homes would become uninhabitable and we would no longer be able to live freely inside. As more trash piles on top of more trash our own stench and garbage ends up swallowing us.

But there’s a way to  rid yourself of your garbage and it’s simple. Ready for this?

Take out your trash.

You see my garbage man isn’t going to come inside my house to get my trash. I have to make the choice every day to take my trash out to him. But you know what happens when I place my trash at the curb? It’s gone. The trash collector faithfully comes to rid me of my trash. But it’s up to me to act on my part. Every night the trash man is ready and willing to take my trash, but I have to be ready and willing to give it to him. It’s so simple, yet I still find myself asking these questions. Do I trust my trash with someone else? Am I sick of the stench? Am I done letting sin swallow me up? The longer you let your sins collect, the more toxic your life becomes. You become consumed. Only until you take your trash out (confess your sins)  can the trash (sin) be removed (forgiven) and then you are purified from all unrighteousness through Christ. Do your part every day to give your trash to the trash man. There’s a perfect trash man ready to tote our trash away forever if we make the decision to bring it to him and lay it at His feet. Can you remember what you threw away in yesterday’s trash or last month’s trash? Most likely you can’t recall everything and that’s the point. Once we give up our garbage to God, he forgives and forgets the filth we festered in for so long.

Take out your trash. Give up your garbage. Trust the One who came to serve and sacrifice for us to send that trash away permanently. I promise you He will turn your trash into a testimony and your garbage into His glory once fully given to Him.
